Explain the art criticism process-
2. In my piece of clay I see lots of balance, everything is symmetrical, the walls are roof are both cut very thick, and it's very open. Meaning, there isn't much going on in the wall , just a few windows. A very simple house. I used clay for this piece and the surface is very smooth, feels like glass. There is a lot of emphasis on the roof because the color is so bright and has a bunch of warmth because of its red color. The shape of this house is a cube at the base of the house and then a pyramid for the roof. The lines are very clean cut for the windows and doors. The yellow, blue, and red create a harmony for the house making it very simple, by only having three colors and not being too overwhelming. 3. In this piece of a simple clay house, I was trying to show/ portray a perfect family home, one that a kid wants to have. Very simple and small with a few colors that go together. The feeling that is communicated is that the house is very simple and is very small. It gives a cozy feeling to whoever is looking at it because of how small it is. The yellow, blue, and red give a happy mood. Since they are all bright colors they create a happy, and simple mood, being all primary colors, to whoever is looking at the art. There is not much to it, but it shows how something so simple can make you very happy by using the correct colors and size. 4. I would say that the art is very successful. It looks like a house, which is what I was trying to portray, and it has colors that go very well together. The balance of the clay piece is pleasing to the eye by making everything symmetrical and easy to look at without a bunch of stuff going on. The only thing that I really don't like about it is the way the clay was cut to make the box, it is too curvy and bumpy and not completely straight on the edges. The idea about a house as a lock box is very creative and that is one of the reasons that I find it successful. Plus, it is very realistic and has a lot of realistic elements to it; meaning that it looks like a house. The use of bright and clear colors is a plus too. I would just next time that I am making a clay box cut the pieces more clean and not as curvy as I made them in this house. The carving of the clay was not the best part of this piece making it harder to make the architecture harder of the piece. The inside is very deep and narrow which I like, but I don't also like how the cutting of the base made the squares look like rectangles by the time I finished the piece. 1. Which project was your most successful? Describe the theme and or topic and the process you went through to complete the project. - I would say that my most successful piece of the whole semester was the watercolor piece, it turned out rally good. I had a great use of value making the candle look real by taking the prisma colored pencils and coloring by the edge of the candle holder. The topic that I had was to do a character from somewhere but change it up as I went. I first drew it out and went in with the lighter colors first, making it the most successful, because in my other pieces I went in with dark colors first. I then added the dark colors which made the painting better than my others in the value area. The reason that I think it was most successful was because I kept it simple and did not try and go for things that I didn't know how to paint/draw. I knew how to draw everything and all of the colors that I used were very pigmented and solid. There was a lot of emphasis on the candle holder and making it look realistic/3-D like the character looked on the movie. The balance of the candle and the background worked well because I also added dots to not make the background completely white. 2. What is art?- "Art" is, the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power (from the dictionary) . You can consider anything art that you think, but there is no one universal definition of art but there is general consensus that art is the conscious creation of something beautiful or meaningful using skill and imagination. Art is subjective, and the definition of art has changed throughout history and in different cultures. People argue weather certain things are art, but it all depends on what you see represented in it. I personally see art in everything because I can see something represented in everything. My personal definition of art would have to be anything that you can create that means something to you, describes how you feel, and represents a certain aspect of how you feel. ( See picture on top) This art makes you feel something, this work makes me feel powerful and proud! 3. What are some reasons why artists make art? - There are many reasons that people create art but some reasons that I think people create art are to show how they feel. This could be how people feel emotions, toward a topic, or politically. People who feel sad, their art may be very dark and gloomy. People also make art to prove a point, for an example political cartoons can prove points or persuade you. Here are some more reasons that i think people can create art, I personally think that it is an open ended question just like saying "What is art?" the possibilities are endless.
This picture explains one of the many reasons people make art, this one I think is most important.( Question number 3) Questions number 2 and 3- The candlestick is my favorite thing that I've done this year and the poster is what I consider art. The clay box is what I am critiquing for my final exam Portrait pieceI drew myself for my portrait, and I used Prisma colored pencils Mixed MediaI used 6 mediums. I used tissue paper and glaze, painting, burning the paper, magazine cut outs, and ink. I used the tissue paper for the background, I used a green color to represent my nature theme and create a forest look. I painted the leaves to make them pop with the tissue paper and I burned the paper to give it a Hanzel and Gretel fairy tale look, it really brought it together. I used the flowers from the magazine to add some color to the art, not make it all green, because nature is very colorful. The ink I used to make branches of a tree, trees are a very big part of nature, and are what a lot of people think of when they think of nature. Including me. My word or theme of the piece was nature, I used leaves and a green background to portray that. Usually when I think of nature I think of green, leaves, and flowers. So, that is how I showed it in my work . Nature and art I feel like have a lot in common and I tried to tie them together in this piece by cutting out paintings of flowers from the art magazine to tie them together. SCULPTURE VESSEL PROJECT (UNFINISHED)1-What do you plan to do with your piece? How do you plan to finish it? - I plan to paint it very bright colors, maybe make the shape of the piece more square in the back. When I'm painting I plan to outline the windows with black paint and color the inside of them yellow. I also plan to paint the roof red and then go in with acrylic detail on the roof. 2 What things have you found difficult so far? How were they difficult?- So far the hardest part of the project was making the shape of the house, and putting it together. It was hard because we had to wait for the clay to harden a little bit before we put it together. It was also very hard to make the lock on the box the right size because I had to make it fit with the other wet clay which was difficult. 3- What do you find successful so far? So far, the shape of my piece, the design, and the piece actually staying together has all been very successful! Everything has stayed intact from before and after the firing which is really good and nothing has cracked/ broken off. 4- Explain your process up to this point. Use vocabulary: slab, scratch and slip, green-ware, bisque, fire. - At this point it is at its at its green-ware state, after it had been fired once. I haven't added any paint yet to it and before this I scored and slipped the pieces of the clay that I made into a box to hold them together. The piece is about to be painted and then fired again for the last time. To make this piece I started off with a slab of clay and then cut out the pieces. (Finished)-sculpture |
Painting colorI learned that green is very hard to mix and execute the right color of green is very hard. The other colors were a lot easier to mix and make.
